Adolescence is already a confusing time without added concerns about social media, safety in schools, staying healthy, family financial security, and loss of loved ones—so we shouldn't be surprised that the rates of anxiety, depression, suicide, and other mental health conditions are on the rise.

This year, Mental Health America Recognizes with our 2022 Back to School Toolkit that our youth are having "All the Feels" as they enter the new school year. These resources look at the issues young people face that are having an impact on their mental health and offer tips on how to deal with these issues and the resulting emotions. The MHA toolkit can also help parents and school personnel better understand the issues, such as the effects of social media on youth mental health and how to be supportive.

BGP purchased the Ready Rosie program last year. Ready Rosie is a research-based parenting curriculum that builds on parents’ knowledge. Ready Rosie harnesses the power of video and mobile technology to empower families and schools to work together to promote school readiness. This curriculum allows parents to sign up for the app free of charge. Staff share powerful games and expert videos that support that family. Family involvement is critical to the success of children. Parents want to be involved but many times are not sure how to support their child. Ready Rosie allows BGP to send short videos and informational flyers to our parents' right to their app. Ready Rosie has Family Engagement workshops already set up so that our staff can lead a productive and informative workshop for families.

Learning to read is a major step in a child’s developmental journey! Teachers and parents can jumpstart the process by reading to children and encouraging them to babble along.

Learn American Sign Language

To sign the word "love"

1. Cross both arms over your chest.
2. Give yourself a little squeeze and rock your torso left to right a few times.
3. This sign looks like you are hugging someone you love. Use this visual to help you remember the sign.

The sign for “I love you” is a combination of the fingerspelled letter I, L and Y.Your thumb and index finger together form an L, while your little finger forms an I.In addition, your thumb and little finger is expressing a Y.So if you combine all three handshapes, you get I-L-Y for I love you.

The sign for "help" is made by closing your left hand into an "A." Place the outstretched palm of your right hand under the left "A" hand and raise both hands. Note: Some people do this sign by placing the right "A" hand on the left palm.

The sign for “please” in American Sign Language is made by first placing your dominant hand with your thumb sticking out and fingers extended over your chest. Secondly, move your hand in circular motion (clockwise) two or three times.

To do the sign for more, flatten out your hands then bring your thumbs and fingers together, to make flat 'O' hands in ASL. Then, bring your hands together and pull them apart repeatedly.

To perform the sign “hello” in American Sign Language (ASL), simply place the hand you are writing with on your forehead close to your ear and move it outwards and away from your body. Don't forget to smile!

Use your dominant hand.
