Position: Early Head Start Home Visiting Teacher
Supervisor: Site Supervisor of Breck Co.
Job Summary:
The candidate for this position will possess the knowledge and skills to partner with parents in planning developmentally appropriate early childhood education experiences for their infants and toddlers. The Home Visiting Teacher will be able to support the parent’s role as their child’s teacher providing information, guidance, and facilitation of parent- child interactions. Home Visiting Teachers will assist parents in supporting emergent skill development in language, literacy, mathematics, science, social and emotional development, creative arts, approaches to learning, physical health, and development. Must be able to maintain efficient and appropriate documentation / record-keeping and conduct open communication with parents and staff. Must mentor EHS Home Visiting Teachers with less seniority.
Education and Experience:
- Meet requirements of Head Start Program Performance Standards and/or Kentucky Division of Regulated Childcare.
- High school Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
- Home Visitor CDA
- or an associate in human services or Related Field
Knowledge and Skills:
- Communicate orally and in writing effectively with diverse groups and demonstrate effective listening skills, respect, be concise and clear, and provide positive body language and empathy with valid feedback.
- Have strong communication skills.
- Must have the ability to use Microsoft Office and other software programs for documentation, record-keeping, monitoring, and reporting.
- Bilingual/bicultural English/Spanish is desirable.
- Maintain strong organizational skills (organizational skills listed below are not all inclusive).
- Ability to create structure and order to boost productivity.
- Ability to prioritize tasks that must be completed immediately, versus those that can be postponed.
- Ability to develop work habits that prevent procrastination, clutter, miscommunication, and inefficiency.
- Ability to keep work and work area neat and organized.
- Ability to meet deadlines in a timely manner.
- Support family engagement through relationship-based competencies.
Physical Demands
- Physically lift a minimum of 50 pounds, be able to physically move in a manner suitable to provide care for small children (kneel, crawl, bend, stoop, squat, walk fast/run) and work outdoors in seasonal weather conditions. Must be able to sit for long periods of time and complete computer-related job duties.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Ability to carry out job responsibilities independently.
- Responsible for maintaining documentation and records for Education, Nutrition, and Attendance.
- Responsible for conducting screening and assessment of assigned Head Start children to meet Head Start Performance Standards including 45- & 90-day requirements with referral as indicated.
- Responsible to model, support, and monitor good hygiene, health, and safety practices.
Specific to Responsibilities Home-Based Visits
- Responsible to plan with parent(s) and provide 1 ½ home visits weekly, a total of 46 home visits per calendar year.
- Responsible for 3 Parent-Teacher Conversations a year. Sharing screening results, observations, and next steps for the child.
- Responsible for maintaining and document communication, written information, and reminders, by telephone or text into ChildPlus.
- Responsible for assisting families in opportunities for parent(s) to volunteer, bus monitor, and participate in Policy Council/ Parent Community Meetings.
- Responsible for implementing stimulating, learning activities that support all developmental domains using materials from the center and materials in the home environment.
Specific to Socializations
- Responsible to plan with parent(s) and provide 2 socializations a month, 3-hour sessions, a total of 22 per calendar year.
- Responsible to have a lesson plan for each socialization addressing all developmental domains, turning in all attendees to Nutrition, and document social in ChildPlus.
Specific to Prenatal & Newborn Visits
- Responsible for services to pregnant women, guiding them with an appropriate agency-determined curriculum.
- Responsible to refer mothers to and assist to make transportation arrangements to access community services such as WIC, Health Department, and/or doctor’s office, etc.
- Responsible for providing prenatal, postpartum, and post-natal information.
- Responsible to contact ERSEA Manager and Health Specialist once the prenatal mother has given birth to schedule a time to do the application and newborn visit. This must be completed within 2 weeks after the baby is born.
Caseload Management
- Responsible for expanding the child’s learning and understanding and encouraging their participation.
- Responsible to provide an atmosphere that is warm, secure, and trust-building, encourages parents and children to express their feelings and is comfortable, promotes positive guidance, “good manners” and respect for adults and others, is positive, with an enthusiastic attitude towards children/families, and models respect and support of children/family’s culture.
- Responsible for monitoring the child’s progress in the ongoing assessment, including documenting observations and anecdotal notes, and referring as appropriate.
- Responsible to provide lesson plans that meet program requirements, are individualized to meet the needs of each child, support cultural diversity, support, and addresses language, literacy, mathematics, science, creative arts, logic & reasoning, social studies, social and emotional development, approaches to learning, physical health, and English language development in preparation of school readiness.
